TURKISH COFFEE IN A COPPER POT

  • There are several reasons why copper cezves (coffee pots) are preferred when making Turkish coffee.
  1. Heat Distribution: Copper is a metal that conducts heat quickly and evenly. This property ensures that the coffee brews homogeneously and helps the flavor to fully develop.
  2. Traditional Method: The tradition of brewing Turkish coffee has a long history, and it is traditionally made using copper cezves (coffee pots). Therefore, using a copper cezve offers a more authentic experience while preserving the traditional method.
  3. Controllability: Copper is a highly conductive material, which allows you to better control the coffee brewing process. You can easily adjust the heat and ensure the coffee reaches the desired consistency.
  4. Foam Formation: Copper coffee pots encourage the formation of foam during coffee brewing. This helps achieve the characteristic frothy and creamy texture of Turkish coffee.
  5. Aroma Preservation: Copper coffee pots preserve the aromas and flavor of coffee better. While coffee pots made from other materials may transfer some odors or flavors, copper pots best preserve the original taste of the coffee.
  • To make Turkish coffee traditionally in a copper cezve (coffee pot), you can follow these steps:
  1. Gather the materials: Gather the necessary ingredients. These may include finely ground Turkish coffee, water, sugar (optional), and spices of your choice (for example, cloves or cinnamon).
  2. Adjust the ratios: Approximately 70-80 ml of water is used for one cup of coffee. You can adjust the amount of sugar according to your taste. The recommended amount of coffee is about 1 teaspoon per cup.
  3. Add water to the saucepan: Heat your copper coffee pot over low heat. Then add the water to the pot and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat.
  4. Add the coffee: Add finely ground coffee to boiling water. The coffee will quickly froth. Wait until froth forms without stirring.
  5. Add sugar (optional): If you're using sugar, add it to the pot after adding the coffee and stir.
  6. Cooking Time: The coffee grounds will slowly settle into the saucepan along with the foam. Continue cooking over low heat until they settle to the bottom. Be careful not to boil the coffee too much, otherwise it may taste bitter.
  7. Service: Once the coffee is brewed, distribute the foam into the cups. Place the coffee pot next to the cups and pour the coffee into them.

Turkish coffee can have different flavors depending on brewing time and the roasting level of the coffee beans. You can find the brewing time and amount of coffee that best suits your taste through trial and error.
